The screeching tires, the sound of metal crumpling on impact… you’ve been in a car accident. Now what?
Car Accidents are Emergencies… Even if Nobody is Hurt
The first thing you need to do is call the authorities if you’ve been in a car accident. Dial 9-1-1 and tell the dispatcher whether you need ambulance, fire or police services. (It’s always a good idea to have the police come out after an accident; their reports can be used to help prove fault if it ever becomes necessary.)
If you are hurt, please, get medical attention. Most of us think we can “tough it out” or worry about the exorbitant prices of medical services, but your health is more important than anything else is. Sometimes people don’t know they’re injured for days or even weeks after a car accident, but you could have a traumatic brain injury, a spinal cord injury or internal injuries that need immediate treatment; you’ll only know if you’re evaluated by a medical professional.
Be Your Own Detective
You don’t have to close off the scene and measure skid marks, interrogate witnesses or try to point fingers, but it’s a good idea to take some pictures of all the vehicles involved. If you’re feeling up to it, take pictures of the surrounding area, including traffic lights, stop signs and lane markings, and exchange contact information with people who saw it happen. There’s no such thing as too much evidence.
Call Your Insurance Company
Even if you’re at fault for the accident (you’re not, are you?), call your insurance company and tell them what happened. Give them the case number from your police report (you did get a police report, right?), and tell them who else was involved and whether anyone was injured. Describe the damage, but try to avoid discussing who was at fault.
Think About Calling a Car Accident Lawyer
The laws regarding compensation for medical bills, property damage and lost wages are often complex. Most people find it’s in their best interest to hire a personal injury lawyer who has experience dealing with car accidents; an attorney can help deal with insurance companies, request compensation and take your case to trial if necessary.
